More than 40 businesses and community organizations reached out to potential customers at the inaugural Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Think Local First Consumer Expo 2012.

"(The expo) gives smaller businesses, finally, a forum to display their goods and services," said Charlie North, president and chief executive officer of the chamber.

While the businesses are unable to sell products during the exhibit at the Poughkeepsie Galleria, the companies can reach out and form a connection with potential buyers.

"We hope that the small businesses get exposed to potential customers," North said.

North said Jill Varricchio, a chamber volunteer member, was the driving force behind its creation. Varricchio hosts seminars throughout the mid-Hudson Valley on effective use of trade shows for marketing purposes. Through her work with the Dutchess chamber, Varricchio helped form the expo.

She said it's helpful businesses to meet hundreds of customers within a short time without spending too much money
