If a bucket has 3 holes and you plug up 2 of them, you still have a leaky bucket. One of the difficulties for proper airsealing is making the air control layer absolutely continuous. Go around the drawing and through every detail without picking up the red pen. This is especially true at the 3 dimensional connections of inside corners, which don’t necessarily announce themselves in 2 dimensional drawings. Window installation is a big source of these kind of challenges, especially given the types of windows installed in high performance projects are new to US installers.
Presentation and Informational Session
Hands-on Design Session for Proper Window Installation
The presentation will provide a clear and practical guide to achieving the highest levels of resilient and sustainable building enclosures, specifically around window enclosures, while eliminating the use of foam. The growing performance demands of air control, vapor control, thermal control, health and sustainability are examined. Foam insulation, dominant in today’s high-performance marketplace, is increasingly recognized as hindering many of these building performance goals. Practitioners are therefore wanting and finding new solutions that virtually eliminate foam and provide greater performance. This presentation is a careful look at how to do it.
475 will demonstrate the recommended high performance installation of a typical window detail. Participants will have a chance to interact with each mock-up to see methods and materials. Each installation method displayed will demonstrate true high performance in real-world situations, starting with water protection: the first line of defense. Water leaks around window installations are a common form of moisture damage that can be avoided with proper techniques that assure long-lasting airtightness. Taking the extra step to prepare for these hard-to-reach spots will make for a durable, tight, install that prevents frustrating leaks during the blower door test.
